VPA Character Education Valley Prep Academy Charter School believes Character Development to be very important to our school. Our goal is to see each student develop the essential qualities valuable and common to our society and to use those qualities to impact positively his or her personal life and community. These traits include trustworthiness, empathy, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship, honesty, courage, diligence, and integrity. VPA Definition: Character is doing the right thing whether anyone is looking or not. Components of our Character Development Program Students Focus • Monthly Whole School Character Trait Integration • Monthly Character Assembly • Motivational Team Challenges • Student of the Month and Other Awards (e.g. Merit) • Leadership Team Building Faculty and Staff Collaboration • Staff meetings that engage teachers in planning and sharing ideas • Adults modeling positive character traits consistently • Classroom learning of 7 Steps to Excellence • Daily Classroom activities that remind students of focus • Creative lessons to support character trait (1-2 times per week) • Learning materials that supplement with focus on character development • In-class incentives for positive behavior • High level of accountability for set standards of character education • Discipline that is consistent and fair with opportunities for transformation • Class leadership teams that allow students choice and ownership of program goals Parent Involvement • Family Folders for Communication • Monthly Updates in School Newsletter • Weekly Updates in Class Informs • Semester Parent Meetings (2 per year) that focus on character • Monthly Character Assemblies that Promote Parent Participation Community Awareness • Service learning projects that extend to the community
